Navigating Ageism and Finding Strength in Uncertain Times

I once had a neighbor who was 25 years older than me, and she frequently lamented ageism challenges. She shared stories of how her resume was often ignored because of her age, even when she worked at a university later in life. The back story was that she and her daughters purchased a house together. Her daughter was supposed to help with the mortgage, but after a falling out, my neighbor was left solely responsible for the payments. It was tough for her to find work due to her age. However, she held on to the house long enough to qualify for a reverse mortgage.

Ironically, I now find myself in a similar predicament. I’m extremely fortunate that my house is paid off, and my responsibilities are limited to utilities. Currently, I work part-time in retail, earning just enough to get by. Every day, I apply for jobs, but fail. My age seems to be a concern for employers in a market dominated by younger managers. Some of them can be mean and disrespectful, I must say.

Navigating a market filled with overly ambitious young people is challenging. Results are expected immediately, with no room for error. I’ve never had a problem working with young people. In fact, just a few months ago, I was employed by a manager half my age. She was driven and disliked mistakes. Her relentless pursuit of perfection made it difficult for me. I was the oldest person in the room, and I'm only middle-aged. During the interview, I was warned about her high expectations. But, desperate for money, I pushed ahead. The outcome was disastrous, exacerbated by my grief over losing a family member. After three weeks, I quit without a backup plan. It was a bold move, but I suffered from immense stress.

Despite not making much money now, I’ve controlled my stress levels. Returning to work was probably premature, but with bills piling up, I had absolutely no choice. My family’s support has been invaluable, helping me through tough times. Currently, I am looking for a job that fits me, and I have enough money to pay my bills. Age remains a significant barrier.

I continue to improve my resume and hope for the foreseeable future. What more could I ask for? Ageism is a harsh reality, but I remain hopeful. I know that with perseverance and my loved ones' support, I will find a job that suits me. My neighbor’s story reminds me that I am not alone in this struggle, and resilience is key.

Here's to finding strength in uncertain times and never giving up on meaningful work.
