The Truth About Aging and Social Media
As a kid growing up in the 90s, dial-up and NetZero were the tools we used to find information. Personally, I thought the internet will become cheaper and more affordable for everyone. With the advent of artificial intelligence-driven software, the internet has reached new heights, causing an explosion of social media content. The first social media sites I remember were YouTube and Myspace. It never occurred to me that these platforms would become the juggernauts they are today.
I consider myself a hardworking worker. At 14, I began working, aiming for financial stability. Fast forward 25 years, and I am still working towards that goal, often with hardly any time for social media. Then suddenly, I was thrown into socialmedia. Today, platforms like YouTube, Instagram, and Snapchat dominate the digital landscape. YouTube, in particular, offers passive income opportunities—just set it and forget it.
Two years ago, I stopped working to care for my mother. During her care, I hoped my money work for me through investments. I learned a lot from YouTube about investing and stocks, and I opened several brokerage accounts. Finally, I felt I was on my way to financial freedom. However, when Covid shut everything down, I lost money on the market. My mistake was investing in crypto without enough knowledge, which led to significant losses.
The countless hours I spent on YouTube trying out different hustles often ended in failure. Marketing, SEO, social media, and email marketing are all necessary to make a dollar online. Imagine being middle-aged and not understanding DM, Instagram, or TikTok. For me, Instagram and Facebook are still challenging to navigate. So much information is shared and stolen online. Currently, I have four friends on Facebook and no photos of myself. On Instagram, I use a cartoon photo.
What are you willing to sacrifice for social media fame and money? It’s a question I struggle with. I am grateful forChatGPT to help articulate my thoughts as I write this blog. I wish this technology had been available when I was in high school and college. I strive to stay updated with new technology to avoid falling behind. With all the advancements today, digital credit cards pose a significant risk. Personally, I don't favor digital credit cards because cell phones hold too much easily accessible data for criminals.
I will end with this thought: making money online is difficult and time-consuming. Is it worth it? Yes, to an extent. However, I will never compromise myself or anyone else for views or clicks. Any money I make will come from hard work.
